After the protest the two of them occupied a plastic table by the other tables and other people eating the same local sandwiches. Night heat curved the pavement upwards. The shop’s air conditioner recycled more hot air back outwards at them.
“So who are you reading?” the younger one ventured.
“What’d you say?” growled the older one.
“What authors are you reading now?”
“You better get that idea out of your head really fucking fast,” the older one murmured. “That world is disappeared.”
The younger one felt embarrassed. The older one drained his beer.
“Never mind. You’re good. You’ll become an academic,” he laughed. “Sorry, my bus”-
“Where are you going?”
“Back to work,” the older one said. “Reading the city.”
