Article purportedly by Jules Verne, but probably by his son. According to the editor's note at the beginning: "In the Year 2889_ was first published in the _Forum_, February, 1889; p. 262. It was published in France the next year. Although published under the name of Jules Verne, it is now believed to be chiefly if not entirely the work of Jules' son, Michel Verne. In any event, many of the topics in the article echo Verne's ideas."

The world tells us how to act. What to think, how to feel, when to be sorry, how to talk and when to keep things to ourselves. In a box, so to speak. There are many reactions and though I do not condone self-destructive methods, but Reality is Real.

First sip, smooth and elegant, with a bitter after-taste. Smell, sweet. Second sip, mind and body, with a strong will. I want more. Excitement becomes desire. A glass-full of her. First glass, not enough. Sweet desire, like her, like the wine. Glass by glass … I get drunk. I want to taste her body, I need the sweet alcohol that is her mind. I want to get drunk!

Phileas Fogg is a rich British gentleman living in solitude. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision. Very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club. Having dismissed his former valet, James Forster, for bringing him shaving water at 84 °F (29 °C) instead of 86 °F (30 °C), Fogg hires a Frenchman by the name of Jean Passepartout as a replacement. At the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000 (equal to about £1.6 million in 2015) from his fellow club members to complete such a journey within this time period. Accompanied by Passepartout, Fogg departs from London by train at 8:45 P.M. on October 2; in order to win the wager, he must return to the club by this same time on December 21, 80 days later.
