Terms of Service

Urnovl is a platform where people write, read and share stories. It includes the website urnovl.co, the Urnovl apps for Android and iOS, and the Urnovl desktop app (together, "Urnovl"). Urnovl is run by:

In these terms, "we" and "us" mean the company above. "You" means the person using Urnovl.

Contact point. For any question, notice or complaint, including those under the EU Digital Services Act, write to support@urnovl.co. We answer in English or Greek.

When you create an account or use Urnovl, you accept these Terms of Service and the documents they include:

• House Rules: what you can and cannot post and do;
• Privacy Policy: how we handle your personal data;
• Terms of Pay: when you buy something on Urnovl;
• Partnership Program: when you earn money on Urnovl;
• the rules of a competition, when you enter it.

If a specific document conflicts with these terms, the specific document applies to that topic. If you do not accept these terms, do not use Urnovl.

Age. You must be at least 15 years old to create an account. You must be at least 18 years old to buy anything, to sell in a page store, or to join the Partnership Program.

Creating an account. You can sign up with your email address (we send you a code to confirm it), with Google, or with Apple on iOS. Give us true and complete information, and keep it up to date.

One person, one account. Each account belongs to one person. Do not share your account, sell it, or create extra accounts to get around a ban, to vote, review or read your own work, or to fake activity.

Security. Keep your password secret. You are responsible for what happens under your account, unless it happened because of our fault. If you think someone else used your account, change your password and tell us at once.

Changes to your account. You can edit your name, profile and settings yourself. To change your username or email, write to us.

Urnovl is free to use. With an account you can:

• write stories chapter by chapter in our editor, with a story bible, canvas and timeline, and export them;
• publish stories as ongoing or complete, public or private, and, as a partner, add PDF, ePub, audiobook and hardcopy formats;
• post inks (short pieces), posts and polls, and choose who sees them;
• read and listen, add stories to your library and shelves, follow writers, pages and shelves;
• comment, like, vote and review, and report content that breaks our rules;
• create a page for a publisher, school, magazine, group or community, and invite members;
• host or enter competitions;
• pay for Urnovl Premium, subscribe to pages, send Bravos (tips) and buy from page stores (see the Terms of Pay);
• earn money as a partner (see the Partnership Program).

Some features are not available on every device. For example, purchases are not available in the iOS app.

We keep improving Urnovl. We may add, change or remove features. If we remove a paid feature you have already paid for, the Terms of Pay explain your rights. If a change significantly affects how you use Urnovl, we tell you in advance.

You own it. Everything you write or upload (stories, chapters, covers, audio, inks, posts, comments, reviews and more) stays yours. We do not claim ownership.

The permission you give us. To run Urnovl, we need your permission to use your content. When you post content, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, format, display, publish and distribute it on Urnovl, and to show it in previews, share images and search results. We may also use parts of your public content (for example a cover and title, with your name) to promote Urnovl. We never sell your content to third parties without your permission.

How long it lasts. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account. We may keep copies for a short time in backups, and longer where the law requires it or to handle a legal claim. Content that other people already saved under a Creative Commons licence you chose stays under that licence.

Your licence choice. For each story you choose a licence: All Rights Reserved (the default) or one of the Creative Commons 4.0 licences (CC0, BY, BY-SA, BY-ND, BY-NC, BY-NC-SA, BY-NC-ND). This controls what other people may do with your story. We do not police what others do with your content outside Urnovl.

Private content. Private stories are visible only to you, and to page admins for stories managed by a page. Content for followers or subscribers is visible only to them.

AI. You must honestly say whether your cover was handcrafted, AI-assisted or AI-generated. We do not use your stories to train AI models, and we tell AI crawlers not to collect them.

Your promises. You confirm that you own your content or have every right needed to post it, and that it does not break the law, anyone's rights (such as copyright, privacy or reputation), or the House Rules. You are responsible for your content.

Deleting. You can delete your stories at any time. You can delete the last chapter of a story. Deleting is permanent.

Feedback. If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them freely, without paying you.

Any user can create a page. The person who creates it is the page owner. The owner can invite members and give them roles (for example admin, author, editor or translator).

Page stories. A page can create stories itself, or authors can attach their own stories to a page. When an author attaches a story, the author and the page accept an agreement that sets how access and any earnings are shared. It is shown before both sides accept, and it stays fixed for that story. We provide the tools and apply the agreement, but the page and the author are responsible for their relationship.

Responsibility. The page owner is responsible for the page, its content and its members' activity on the page. A page that sells, hosts competitions or runs subscriptions must keep its promises to its readers, buyers and entrants.

Closing a page. To close a page, write to us.

Page owners can host writing competitions. The host page is the organiser. It sets the rules, the dates, the judging criteria and the prizes, and it alone must deliver the prizes. We are not the organiser and we do not guarantee prizes. Entry to competitions is free.

When you enter, you accept the competition's rules and allow the host, co-host pages and judges to read, judge and feature your entry as those rules describe. The host may remove entries that break the rules. Judging decisions are made by the host and judges.

If a host does not deliver a prize, tell us. We may act against the page under these terms.

We want Urnovl to be safe and fair. This is how we moderate.

Reports. Anyone with an account can report a user, page, story, chapter, format, comment, review, post, ink, canvas, shelf, product or competition, and choose a reason (the reasons are listed in the House Rules). We review every report. The reported person is not told who reported them.

How we decide. People on our team review reports and decide. We also use automated checks to detect spam and fake reads, and to protect sign-up with reCAPTCHA.

What we can do. If content or behaviour breaks the law, these terms or the House Rules, we may:

• remove content or limit who can see it;
• remove an entry, a review or a comment;
• limit features, such as earning money or selling;
• suspend or permanently ban an account or a page.

We choose the action that fits how serious and how repeated the problem is.

We tell you why. When we act against your content or account, we tell you what we did, why, and which rule or law it is based on, unless the law does not allow it or it would put someone at risk.

You can disagree. If you think we got it wrong, reply or write to support@urnovl.co within 6 months. A person who was not involved in the first decision reviews it. You can also use an out-of-court dispute settlement body certified under the Digital Services Act, or go to court.

You do not need an account to tell us about illegal content, including copyright infringement. Write to support@urnovl.co with:

1. the exact link to the content;
2. why you believe it is illegal (for copyright: which work is yours, and proof);
3. your name and email (not needed for reports about child sexual abuse material);
4. a statement that you believe in good faith that your notice is accurate and complete.

We confirm receipt, act quickly, and tell you what we decided. We tell the person who posted the content, as described in section 8.

If we remove content because of a claim, purchases linked to it may be affected. The Terms of Pay explain what happens then.

We suspend accounts that repeatedly post infringing or illegal content. We may also suspend people who repeatedly send notices that are clearly unfounded.

Besides the House Rules, you must not:

• copy or scrape content from Urnovl with bots, crawlers or scripts, or use it to train AI models (search engines may index public pages as our robots.txt file allows);
• fake activity, such as reads, votes, likes, follows or reviews, including with other accounts or paid services;
• get around paywalls, subscriber locks or any security measure;
• resell or share paid access to content;
• overload, attack, probe or reverse-engineer Urnovl, or spread malware;
• collect other users' personal data, or use our messaging features to send ads or unwanted commercial messages;
• use Urnovl in a way that breaks any law.

The Urnovl name, logo, design and software belong to us or our licensors. You may not use them without our written permission, except to link to Urnovl or to share your own work.

Links to other websites are provided for convenience. We are not responsible for them.

You can stop using Urnovl and delete your account at any time from the Settings tab of your profile. The Privacy Policy explains what happens to your data. Cancel your subscriptions first.

We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms or the law, if the law requires it, or to protect other users. We tell you the reason, as described in section 8. For accounts without a serious breach, we give you at least 30 days' notice before closing them.

If we close Urnovl as a whole, we give you at least 60 days' notice so you can export your stories.

Sections 5 (licence for content already shared), 13, 14 and 16 continue to apply after the agreement ends.

We work hard to keep Urnovl running and safe, but we cannot promise that it will always be available or free of errors. Content on Urnovl is written by users. We do not check it before it is published and we do not endorse it.

We are responsible for losses you suffer that are a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or our lack of reasonable care. We are not responsible for losses that were not foreseeable, for losses caused by other users or third parties, or for business losses (for example lost profit) of users acting as a business.

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, for intent or gross negligence, or any other liability that cannot be limited by law. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

If you use Urnovl as a business (for example as a page that sells), you agree to cover our reasonable costs from claims by third parties caused by your content or your breach of these terms.

We may change these terms, for example when Urnovl or the law changes. We tell you about important changes at least 15 days before they apply, in the app, on the website or by email. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before the change applies. If you keep using Urnovl after that, the new terms apply.

If a court finds part of these terms invalid, the rest stays in force. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later. We may transfer this agreement to a company that takes over Urnovl; we will tell you, and your rights will not be reduced. You may not transfer your account or this agreement. Nobody else has rights under these terms.

These terms are governed by Greek law. The courts of Athens, Greece, have jurisdiction.

If you are a consumer living in the European Union, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country, and you can bring a claim in the courts of your country.
